Universiteit Maastricht concerned about possible blanket ban on animal testing
Universiteit Maastricht (UM) is concerned about an impending blanket ban on animal testing. The European Commission approved a citizens' initiative earlier this year to ensure that make-up should no longer be tested on animals. This has sparked discussions to even introduce a total ban on animal testing.
Impact
According to the University, which has an animal testing centre, this could actually have far-reaching consequences. Scientific research would stagnate and for the development of drugs and vaccines, we would be dependent on animal testing outside the European Union.
Alternatives
UM would rather see faster investment in processes to achieve alternatives to animal testing in phases, rather than pulling the plug on the current way of working all at once.
