Three percent growth in university students per year expected
The municipality expects a 3 percent growth per year in university students. They give this as a response to questions from the Socialistische Partij (SP) about the growth of the number of students and their housing.
The municipality expects to see a slight decline in students at middelbaar beroepsonderwijs – MBO (vocational secondary education) and hoger beroepsonderwijs – HBO (higher vocational education) schools. Overall, these expectations result in an average annual housing demand growth of 480 units until 2025. The municipality says it is taking this into account in current and future housing programming.
However, figures from the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (education implementation service) show that Maastricht had 125 early school leavers at the vocational level during the 2021-2022 academic year. This places our city in 5th place in a top-5 ranking of early school leavers in the Limburg province.
