Minister of Education approves opening of Montessori school

Montessori College Maastricht has been officially recognised as a secondary school. The minister responsible for Primary and Secondary Education, Dennis Wiersma, told the 6 initiators. 

The school will open its doors at the start of the 2024 academic year. Where that will be is currently unknown. A total of 4 classes of about 25 pupils are expected at the start. To start with, there is only room for voorbereidend wetenschappelijk onderwijs – VWO (pre-academic education) pupils. In time, the Montessori College wants to expand to hoger algemeen voortgezet onderwijs – HAVO (higher general secondary education) and voorbereidend middelbaar beroepsonderwijs – VMBO (pre-vocational secondary education) as well.

Montessori education approaches children to their own potential. Students work independently and are often in a class with several year groups. Montessori College Maastricht will cooperate intensively with, among others, Kindcentrum Montessori and Basisschool De Poort, which already the Montessori approach in primary education.
