Man rescued from river Maas dies, suspect arrested

As reported by Politie Maastricht, 1 of the 3 people who were rescued from the river Maas near the Maaspromenade in Maastricht on Friday night has died.

A male suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.

At approximately 21:35 on Friday evening, emergency services received a report that a man was in the water and that 2 other persons tried to come to his aid and also jumped into the water.

These 2 persons were quickly pulled out of the river and the fire brigade pulled the man, a 23-year-old living in Maastricht, out of the water at around 22:00.

He was resuscitated and taken to hospital. He died later that night.

After getting out of the water, the police immediately launched an investigation.

It emerged from the initial report that a conflict with another person had possibly taken place prior to the deceased being into the water.

A clear description was available from witness statements and CCTV footage enabled this person to be traced.

Around 22:25, the arrest of the suspect, a 58-year-old man from Maastricht, took place on the Bosscherweg in Maastricht.

Investigations should reveal what exactly took place on the quay of the Maaspromenade in Maastricht.
