Maastricht Carnaval performer John Tana wins De Sjeng

John Tana has been declared the winner of De Sjeng 2023.

Beppie Kraft announced this last weekend on behalf of the Sjeng Kraft Kompenei. The Sjeng is awarded annually to an iconic accordionist or up-and-coming talent from Limburg and pays homage to the namesake of the Sjeng Kraft Kompenei.

The award consists of a cash prize and a statuette by artist Ton Wouters. The official presentation will take place next Saturday during the anniversary edition of the 11devande11de in Roermond. There, according to tradition, John Tana will also sing the evergreen Carnaval hit 'Iech bin zoe verleef'.

"John" (played by Maastrichtenaar Seth Verhaegen) is originally from Marseille, where he says he was already making music as a little garçon. As a new striking artist, or icon as he calls himself, he feels he is destined to become the new Maastricht chansonnier. A music figure he feels there is a great need for in the city. With this award it seems he is well on his way to reaching his goal.

Previous winners
Previous Maastricht winners were Dominique Paats, John Thoma, Joep Servais and Ludy van Dijk.
