Maastricht Aachen Airport reopens

After an 8-week period of work to renovate the runway, Maastricht Aachen Airport (MAA) is open again.

Last Friday, in honour of the moment, 2 electric Pipistrel type aircraft landed, one of them carrying Christine van Basten-Boddin, the burgemeester (mayor) of Beek.

Party
Saturday and Sunday saw a festive reopening of the airport, with the first passenger and cargo flights. This summer, passenger planes from Corendon and Ryanair will fly from MAA. Cargo aircraft from Turkish Cargo, among others. Royal Jordanian, Qatar and Emirates operate a total of 11 flights per week.

Test flights
Interested parties could watch the take-off and landings of the electric aircraft on both weekend days; a number of test flights were raffled off among local residents and employees. A photo exhibition on 78 years of Maastricht Aachen Airport was set up in the Jet Center hangar.

Frans Timmermans canvassing students at Universiteit Maastricht

Tomorrow, the Netherlands will choose who will have a seat in the Tweede Kamer (House of Representatives) in the coming years. There is little doubt that Maastrichtenaar Frans Timmermans may secure enough votes to do so. The GroenLinks/PvdA party leader even hopes to become the country's Premier (prime minister). This morning, Timmermans went to talk to students at Universiteit Maastricht, hoping to secure some extra votes before tomorrow.
