Council votes to investigate extending opening hours: 'Sunday no longer sacred'
There will be a study on possibly extending Sunday opening hours of shops selling food items. Currently, shops are open on Sundays from 12:00-18:00.
Extending the opening hours is a topic that has caused much debate in the council for some time. For instance, advocates argue for extending because, for instance, dual-income earners work during the week and therefore want to go to the shops on weekends.
Opponents, on the other hand, say they are worried about 'Americanisation', as Bennie van Est of Party 50+ calls it. They also do not like the fact that small entrepreneurs are forced to cooperate in this. GroenLinks also criticised the plan: 'This creates more consuming, while we are in favour of consuming less.'
