Concerns about swimming in open water
The kinderraad (children's council) wants the stadsbestuur (city council) review the current stance on swimming in open water, such as lakes and rivers in Maastricht. The children's council sees safety risks in this for various reasons and hopes that the city council will take measures where necessary. One of the concerns is that the water quality is not always good enough.
Swimming lessons
The city council has pledged to keep an eye on it. According to the children's council, there should be an overview of where it safe and not safe to swim around Maastricht. There should also be swimming lessons provided which focusses on swimming in open water.
Website
The municipality also refers to the www.zwemwater.nl website (in Dutch), where the relevant Waterschap (water board) indicates the safety of lakes and rivers across the Netherlands.
